GMA Urges Senate to Vote on Food Safety Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In a joint letter to Senate Leadership, the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) and 17 other organizations today urged the Senate to quickly schedule a vote on S. 510, the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009.
“The food and beverage industry is committed to partnering with Congress, the Obama Administration and the FDA to strengthen and modernize our nation’s food safety system,” said GMA President and CEO Pamela G. Bailey. “The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009 will provide the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with the resources and authorities the agency needs to help make prevention the focus of our food safety strategies. We urge the Senate to vote on this important, bipartisan bill as quickly as possible.”
Other groups signing the letter include: American Public Health Association, Center for Foodborne Illness Research & Education, Center for Science in the Public Interest, Consumer Federation of America, Consumers Union, Food Marketing Institute, International Bottled Water Association, National Association of Manufacturers, National Confectioners Association, National Consumers League, National Restaurant Association, Produce Marketing Association, The PEW Charitable Trusts, Trust for America’s Health , Snack Food Association, and S.T.O.P Safe Tables Our Priority.
The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009 will enhance public health and safety by: --Requiring all food companies to develop a food safety plan -Improving the safety of imported food and food ingredients -Adopting a risk-based approach to inspection
