WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Grocery Manufacturers Association issued the following statement by Robert Brackett, GMA Senior Vice President and Chief Government Affairs Officer, in response to today’s federal government update on the safety of Bisphenol A (BPA):
“Product safety is the top priority for the food and beverage industry. We agree with today’s reaffirmation by HHS and FDA that baby bottles, infant sipping cups, canned infant formula and other foods in cans with linings that utilize BPA are safe, and that there is no need for consumers to change their consumption habits. That position is supported by the findings of numerous food safety agencies around the globe, including the European Food Safety Authority, the World Health Organization, the Japanese National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology and Health Canada.
“As new research and studies are conducted, it is the obligation of our industry and the appropriate regulatory authorities to review that evidence and make the appropriate decisions that ensure the continued safety of our products. While the FDA currently conducts a new BPA safety assessment, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will also devote $30 million to a two-year study of the safety of BPA. These two projects will add to the already robust catalogue of scientific evidence on BPA. We look forward to working cooperatively and responsively with HHS, FDA, NIH, Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), other stakeholders and the world’s food safety agencies in our continuous efforts to ensure the safety and quality of our products and packaging.”
