WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) today issued the following statement from GMA President and CEO Pamela G. Bailey regarding release today by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency of its principles for reform of the Toxic Substances Control Act:
“We applaud Administrator Jackson and the Obama Administration for releasing thoughtful principles for TSCA reform and we look forward to working with the Administration to reform federal chemical review and management laws to boost consumer confidence in the safety of consumer products. Ensuring the safety of our products is the single most important goal of the consumer products industry and our industry devotes enormous resources to meet that objective. Consumer product companies share Administrator Jackson’s view that steps must be taken to improve confidence in the safety of chemicals used to manufacture products and to promote even greater innovation.
“The consumer products industry supports many of the principles outlined today by Administrator Jackson. We look forward to working with Congress and the Administration to reform TSCA to identify “priority” chemicals which should be subject to greater scrutiny, to ensure that EPA has adequate information about chemical uses, to leverage the chemical management programs undertaken by other nations, to integrate the patchwork quilt of laws governing product safety, and to bring clarity to EPA’s risk management tools.
“As the Administration develops specific TSCA reforms, policymakers should take care to promote – and not stifle – innovation and new product development. We urge the Administration to create a stakeholder process that will bring industry, environment, consumer, public health and animal welfare interests together to ensure that EPA has the resources, deadlines and authorities necessary to boost confidence in federal chemical review and management.”
