WASHINGTON, D.C. - While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the food industry continue to investigate products affected by last week's Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) recall, the following information is designed to assist reporters and editors and clarify their coverage of the PCA recall:

1. National brands of jarred peanut butter are not affected by the PCA recall.

2. PCA does not sell peanut butter directly to consumers. PCA peanut butter is sold only to institutions and food manufacturers (some of which may use it as an ingredient in other processed/packaged foods).

3. Some food manufacturers may use PCA peanut butter in baked or processed foods, such as crackers, cookies, cakes or ice cream to name a few. The FDA and food manufacturers are working to identify products that may be affected, to track the ingredient supply chain of those products and to take the appropriate action to remove them from the marketplace.

4. Consumers who are concerned about specific products should contact the manufacturer via the toll free phone number on the package or by visiting the manufacturer Web site.
